Enhanced 911 (E911) service information

e911 services are not available in all areas. Please read this article and contact Teliax with any questions. Please be aware: If your power goes out, your Internet connection is down, or if the Teliax service is unreachable, attempts to dial 911 will not complete through the Teliax network.

Teliax, like all PSTN-interconnected VOIP providers, is federally mandated to connect all 911 calls.

e911 is defined as:

A North American telephone network (NANP) feature of the 911 emergency-calling system that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number as required by the Wireless Communications and Public Safety Act of 1999. This is generally done by a form of reverse telephone directory that is supplied by the telephone company as a computer file, used to associate the caller's phone number with a physical street address. It provides emergency responders with the location of the emergency without the person calling for help having to provide it. This is often useful in times of fires, break-ins, kidnapping, and other events where communicating one's location is difficult or impossible.

e911 is available in most areas where Teliax offers local phone service. e911 is not a required feature but we strongly encourage you to take advantage of the feature where available. Please be sure to check that we can offer e911 in your area before select a phone number if you require emergency services. You can do this when adding an e911 location. If e911 service is available in your location, the 'Enable e911' checkbox becomes available.

For existing Teliax customers:

- Log in to the Dashboard.
- Visit the Locations section.
- Add a new Location.

Once the location is created and you have verified the information, it will take you back to the locations section.

- Edit the Location, and if e911 is available for this Location, the checkbox for e911 becomes active.
- Once the Location is e911 enabled, edit the Devices you would like attached to this Location.
- Attach the Location to the Device and click submit.

A note on e911 test calls

A 911 call center is for emergency use only! If you just need to verify your address, you can dial 933. Before making any test calls to 911, always dial the non-emergency number for your jurisdiction first and request that you would like to make an e911 test call. Non-emergency calls to 911 are punishable by a fine or other civil action! Teliax is not responsible for any charges or legal problems that arise from misuse of the 911 system!

How e911 works on the Teliax network

When you call 911 from a Teliax-connected phone and e911 is NOT enabled for your device, you are routed to an emergency call center - not a PSAP*. The call center will gather your location information and transfer you to the closest PSAP.

If e911 locations are enabled, your call will automatically be sent to the closest serving PSAP. A callback number is attached to this e911 location. In the event that the PSAP calls you back, it will ring all devices attached to the e911 location.

*PSAP - Public Safety Answering Point

If you do not provide address information and a 911 hangup call is received, emergency services may not be able to locate you. Teliax is contacted by the emergency call center and will make every attempt to provide location information, but often times we are unable to do so.

If you do not provide address information and a 911 call is placed from your account you may be liable for additional charges and fees, typically around $100 per incident.
